#Worldflags

2017 | Installation

"World Flags" by Juan Carlos Rosa Casasola reinterprets national flags to explore the complexity of identity, global interconnection, and the fragility of cultural symbols. This series reflects on the global impact of fast fashion, an industry whose waste is projected to reach 130 million tonnes annually by the end of the decade. Through installations featuring altered clothing, Casasola highlights the flags of the primary garment-producing nations and the countries in Africa burdened with the industry’s largest landfills.

By deconstructing these national emblems with discarded textiles, the series critiques the hidden costs of globalization and consumerism. It challenges viewers to reconsider the meaning of national symbols in a world where borders are blurred, inequalities persist, and the environmental impact of overproduction continues to escalate.
