Art class in Berlin with adults painting in a small group

Looking for an Art Class in Berlin?

Hi there, I’m Juancar! I love teaching painting and drawing classes for adults who want to explore their creativity, improve their drawing and painting skills, or simply try new techniques and ways of working.

As an artist myself, I share my knowledge and experience with you in a playful, intuitive and approachable way — helping you build confidence, experiment freely and discover your own artistic style.

I know finding the right art class can be difficult, especially if you are a beginner. Some courses focus mainly on technical exercises, while others expect you to already know what you are doing.

My classes are designed to sit somewhere in between: you learn practical artistic skills, but you also have space to experiment and develop your own visual language.

Depending on the course, you may work with acrylic paint, charcoal, pencils or markers. Exercises can focus on portraits, still life, flowers, hands, composition or even painting from a live model in movement.

You will learn how to look at what you are creating, understand why something works or does not work, and make more confident artistic decisions.

The aim is to give you the skills and confidence to develop your own.

Art Classes for Everyone: from Beginners to Experienced Artists

Painting Classes for Beginners

Never painted since school? That's absolutely fine. You do not need previous experience or a formal art education to join one of my classes.

Beginner-friendly painting classes introduce you to essential concepts such as colour, composition, proportion, observation and brushwork with lots of space for experimentation — the best way to learn something is by playing and creating mistakes.

You will learn through step-by-step exercises and receive individual guidance throughout the process. I want you to learn on your own path and tempo.

Many participants arrive thinking they are "not good at art" or they "can't paint". One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing that change: once people understand how to approach a painting, they often discover that they are capable of much more than they expected — in just a few hours!

Painting Classes for Experienced Artists

If you already have some painting experience, you can use the classes to take your work further and expand your comfort zone.

Rather than following a fixed formula, you can explore different approaches to colour, composition, mark-making, realism and expression.

Individual feedback is adapted to your existing skills and interests, so you can concentrate on the areas where you want to grow.

Whether you want to become more expressive, improve your portraits, understand composition better or simply break out of a creative routine, the classes give you practical tools to experiment.

For example, if you are comfortable in figurative art, it will be super helpful to explore abstract and expressive markmaking. You can use later this new knowledge in your figurative paintings and combine these styles.

Expressive Drawing Classes for Adults

An important part of drawing is not only what you draw, but how you draw it.

In my classes, you will explore line, shape, proportion, light and shadow, observation, texture and composition through different drawing materials such as markers, charcoal and coloured pencils.

A line can say a lot. It can shout with anger, tremble with fear, or whisper with love.

Through expressive drawing exercises, you will discover how the way you draw can communicate movement, mood and personality — not just reproduce what you see.

As adults, we often become afraid of making mistakes. We may feel that there is a "right" way to draw, and that getting something wrong means we are not good at it.

These classes offer a safe and relaxed space to let go of that pressure, experiment, make mistakes and learn from them. Here the goal is to explore, practise and gradually gain confidence in your own way of drawing.

These skills are particularly useful when sketching from life, drawing from observation or even working on your paintings, as drawing is an important foundation for developing your own artistic language.

The approach is practical, playful and accessible, while still providing a solid structure and clear guidance. You do not need to be able to draw realistically before joining.

Exercises are adapted to your level and help you become more confident in observing, interpreting and translating what you see in your own way.

What You Can Learn in the Classes

The exact exercises vary from course to course, but classes may include:

  • Acrylic painting techniques

  • Expressive painting

  • Drawing from observation

  • Portrait painting

  • Still life painting

  • Painting flowers

  • Figure and life drawing

  • Painting from a live model

  • Colour mixing and colour relationships

  • Composition

  • Proportion and structure

  • Light and shadow

  • Developing expressive marks

  • Moving between realistic and abstract approaches

  • Finding your own artistic style

Because there's not a "correct" way to paint, the classes introduce different tools and approaches so that you can discover what works for you. I'll be really happy if in my classes you challenge yourself to explore new ways of painting you haven't tried before.

Learn to Paint with Confidence

Personalised Feedback is the heart of the class

One of the main differences between following a painting tutorial or an art class in a small group is that you get personalised feedback.

During the workshops, you can receive individual advice about your painting or drawing while you are working on it.

The feedback is adapted to your experience, your goals and the way you naturally work.

You might need help with composition. Understanding composition is one of the most useful skills you can develop as an artist. You can read more about composition for beginners here.

Or maybe you want to understand better colour relationships and experiment with colour pallets.

Probably I'll challenge you to loosen up your brushwork or make more expressive marks.

Learn the Principles Behind Your Painting

You will learn principles that you can take into your future work: how to start a painting, how to solve problems by painting, how to use colour in your advantage, and make decisions about what to emphasise in your composition.

These skills remain useful long after the workshop has finished and you can apply them in any other technique.

Develop Your Own Artistic Style

You do not need to arrive with a fully developed style. Style develops through experimentation, observation and making artistic decisions repeatedly.

The classes give you opportunities to explore different degrees of realism and abstraction, expressive techniques and ways of working with colour and composition.

I'll challenge you in some excercises to study someone else's style you like, so you can gradually discover what feels natural to you or where do you have more fun painting.

I can help you paint both hyper realistic and extra expressive.

Painting from Life and Life Drawing in Berlin

Some of the longer painting courses include a session working with a live model.

This gives you the opportunity to practise observing a real person directly rather than relying only on photographs.

Drawing and painting from life can help you understand proportion, gesture, structure, light, composition and the relationship between the figure and its surroundings.

It can also be a great introduction if you would eventually like to attend life drawing sessions in Berlin but do not yet feel confident drawing from a live model.

Depending on the course, you may work with portraiture, hands, the figure or other subjects.

Private nude model drawing sessions are also available separately. Please contact me for further details and available dates.

Art Classes in English, German and Spanish

You do not need to be fluent in German to participate in my classes.

Many of the classes are taught in English and German, making them suitable for Berlin's international community.

I'm always happy to give you individual guidance in a language you feel more confortable with.

Personal feedback can also be provided in Spanish. I'm from Benidorm (Spain).

What Should I Bring to an Art Class?

I recommend you to bring old clothes and/or your own painting apron. Acrylic paint is hard to remove from your clothes and it's really easy to get stained once you are in the creative flow.

For some classes I'll ask you to bring a collection of images to use as an inspiration for your paintings. It can be photos, postcards, album covers, or artworks you like.

Specific material requirements are always provided in advance with the individual workshop information.

Who Are These Art Classes For?

These classes are suitable for adults who want to:

  • Start painting for the first time

  • Improve their existing painting skills

  • Learn acrylic painting

  • Become more confident drawing

  • Explore expressive painting

  • Improve composition

  • Paint portraits or still lifes

  • Learn to work from observation

  • Try painting from a live model

  • Develop a personal artistic style

  • Spend time doing something creative after work

  • Meet other creative people in Berlin

You can join as you are, alone or with friends, you do not need to arrive with a particular artistic background.

I prefer to work with people aged 16+, because usually the majority of the participants are adults, but sometimes someone comes with their children and it's fun too.
