I Choose to Offer Non-Academic Painting Classes in Berlin
We are so lucky to have such a big offer of art schools, academies and highly specialized training programs in Berlin. Many of my students are actively looking for painting and drawing classes in Berlin and their feedback about my teaching method is amazing.
They often say beautiful things after the class:
“Your class is the highlight of the week.”
“I’m impressed of what I’ve done”
“I like that you are allowing us to paint what we like to paint.”
“I’m learning a lot on your classes and they are fun”
This is exactly why I love to offer non-academic painting classes.
Art education beyond the academic model
Traditional art education can be incredibly valuable, but it often comes with strong hierarchies, rigid methodologies and a focus on results rather than process. For many adults, especially those who did not study art formally, this environment can feel intimidating or exclusionary. My approach is different.
I design painting and drawing classes in Berlin that are accessible, playful and grounded in experience of learning by doing and learning while playing. You don’t need prior knowledge, technical skills or artistic ambition. What you need is curiosity and an open mind with the willingness to explore.
These classes are not about becoming a professional artist. They are about reconnecting with creativity as a human capacity, as a child who is drawing for fun, without fear of what other people might say or think.
Why “non-academic” matters
Choosing a non-academic format is a conscious decision. I will teach you how to paint and draw, but in my classes:
-
We learn from each other. You can be inspired by your teacher, but also from other participants.
-
The focus is on experimentation, intuition and personal rhythm.
-
The process matters more than the final image. But I’m helping everyone with personal feedback and with the final touches, so you’ll bring home a picture you are proud of.
By removing academic expectations, painting becomes less challenging, more relaxing and more fun. This approach helps participants let go of internal pressure and perfectionism, something many of us carry into creative spaces without realizing it. I have the opinion that we need to perform without mistakes in our workplaces, but not in our after-work activities.
Painting and drawing as embodied practices
Many of my workshops combine drawing, painting and mindful movement. It’s great to use the whole body to draw some lines, to paint with the fingers and get messy, in contrast with our digital lives. Creativity does not only happen in the head; it happens in the body. Slowing down, breathing, sensing weight and gesture allows the hand to move more freely and the mind to quiet down.
For people searching for painting classes in Berlin for beginners, to express their creativity, this embodied approach often feels surprisingly relieving. It creates a safe entry point into artistic practice without the fear of judgment.
A space for adults, who wants to learn something new
Most participants in my classes are adults who want a creative activity after working in the office at the corporate or freelancers, either parents, phd-students, locals or newcomers to Berlin.
They are not looking for certificates. They are looking for:
-
A weekly ritual
-
A space to disconnect from screens
-
A way to reconnect with themselves
-
A creative in-person community space
Art as connection
In Berlin’s cultural landscape, art is often associated with visibility, productivity and performance. My classes offer an alternative: art as connection.
Connection to the body, the materials, the present moment, yourself and other people in the room. This is why community plays an important role in my workshops. People draw side by side, share the painting materials, exchange thoughts without comparison or competition, learning from everyone and sharing a beautiful experience together.
Why we needs these spaces in Berlin
Berlin attracts people from all over the world who has an interest in art, and expressing themselves, many of whom are searching for new ways of living or even sober activities. Not everyone wants or needs an academic path, but many still long for creative expression.
Offering non-academic drawing and painting classes in Berlin is my way of contributing to a more inclusive, diverse and human-centered art culture. Art does not belong only to institutions or should be expensive. Creativity belongs to everyday life, it is not something you need to prove. It is something you are allowed to practice.
