What to Expect in My Painting Classes for Beginners in Berlin

I facilitate painting workshops for adults who want to start painting, or restart because you used to paint in school but never painted since then, or for those who get stuck at home.

Maybe you’ve bought paints and brushes, watched a few tutorials, and tried to paint on your own… but you use to feel frustrated, unsure, or disappointed with the result. You want to paint, but you also want guidance, structure, and a space where you can relax and learn without pressure.

That’s exactly why I love teaching painting classes in Berlin for beginners: to offer in-person, small groups, clear explanations, dynamic exercises, and a calm, welcoming atmosphere where learning feels enjoyable and achievable.

What You’ll Learn in My Beginner Painting Classes

This is usually the first thing people want to know: what to expect at my painting workshops. My classes are very hands-on, structured, practical, and playful. I choose to offer non-academic painting classes, because I want you to learn by doing, step by step and with personalized feedback and having fun.

In my beginner-friendly painting classes, you will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of painting in a clear and accessible way

  • Practice color mixing and basic color theory

  • Paint from observation (with a model or a still life, expect fun setups)

  • Learn to paint from photo references of your choice

  • Explore different styles and approaches: abstract, figurative, expressive

  • Try out different genres: portrait, still life, landscape, introspective

  • Learn how to draw and paint hands (yes, hands might be difficult!)

  • Discover some of my favorite creative techniques that I also use in my own artwork

  • Do interactive and practical exercises to loosen up your hand and your mind

  • Work in structured classes, but always with flexibility

  • Learn by doing (better than memorizing rules)

  • Receive personalized challenges, helping you gently step out of your comfort zone

The goal is not to paint “perfect” artworks, perfect doesn’t exist (or I think it’s boring). In my painting classes you will build confidence, curiosity, and a solid foundation you can keep growing from, and have a good time.

Who Is Usually Coming to My Classes

I teach for adults (and young adults) living in Berlin, also internationals or expats visiting the city. They are beginners or people with basic painting experience, friendly and curious, open-minded people who enjoy learning together. People looking for a creative hobby after work, or people who want to disconnect from daily stress, or even students who want to prepare to start their art studies. Here you will enjoy a calm, friendly group atmosphere.

I teach for small groups, which makes it easy to connect, exchange ideas, and feel comfortable, even if you’re shy or unsure at first. Some students come with their friends or relatives, but many students come alone and end up meeting like-minded people along the way.

I want my painting classes to be a calm, supportive and inclusive learning environment. I’m part of the LGTBIQ* community, and inclusivity is a lived value for me. My classes are a safe, respectful, and welcoming space for people of all identities, backgrounds, and experiences. Diversity is celebrated, not questioned.

Painting itself has many benefits: it’s meditative, grounding, playful, and deeply relaxing. In class, we take learning to paint seriously, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We laugh, experiment, and enjoy the process. Many students tell me that my painting classes become their weekly highlight, because there are their moment to disconnect, breathe, and reconnect with themselves.

Why Learning Painting in a Studio Makes a Big Difference

Painting at home can be frustrating, especially at the beginning. In my in-person painting classes in Berlin, you benefit from:

  • Clear structure without rigidity

  • Immediate feedback and guidance

  • Seeing how others approach the same exercise

  • Not feeling alone or “lost”

  • A regular rhythm that helps you keep going

Very often, one small correction or suggestion is enough to unblock you and help you move forward with confidence.

Why Acrylic Painting Is Ideal for Beginners

I mostly work with acrylic paint in my beginner classes, because it’s one of the most versatile and accessible mediums.

Acrylic painting is ideal for beginners because:

  • It dries relatively fast, which allows experimentation

  • You can work in layers and make corrections

  • It’s affordable and easy to find

  • It works for both abstract and figurative painting

  • You can achieve many effects with simple materials

  • It doesn’t smell and you can clean it easily with water and soap

It’s a great medium to explore, play, and learn without fear.

Group Size and Learning Experience

All my painting classes are taught in small groups of maximum 10–14 participants. This allows me to give personal feedback, adapt exercises to your level, and create a safe, comfortable learning environment.

Because groups are small, I strongly recommend booking in advance, classes often fill up quickly.

Which Materials are Included

All materials are included in every one-day-class. You don’t need to bring anything except clothes that can get messy, and sometimes pictures of your choice.

We work with simple, affordable, and sustainable materials, often using primary colors, easily accessible tools, paper cut into smaller pieces for quick exercises. This approach helps you learn without fear of wasting materials, and makes it easier to continue painting at home.

I highly recommend to keep practicing at home, repeating the exercises we do in class, just for fun. Painting is about practice, keep consistent and playful. It doesn’t need to be intimidating. Sometimes, all it takes is the right space, the right guidance, and the courage to start.
